WP # 13: Group Report – Generating a Complexity Roadmap

WP13 Expert Group Report – Generating a Complexity Roadmap As a central player in the European Complexity Research field, this CA is perfectly situated to provide policy makers with an Expert Group Report – a comprehensive study of the European complexity community, its interests, goals, and structure. This colossal task may seem too ambitious, mostly because of the size of the material that needs to be encompassed; nevertheless, we aim at such a comprehensive goal by forming an expert group, and in parallel creating a web-based interface for communal authoring. We start by using the tool for characterizing the STREPs and for clarifying the status and relationships between them. On the later stage, by allowing the entire community to participate in the aggregation of the material, we will democratically allow some of the raw material of the report to emerge from communal contributions. Objectives

Due to its central position in the Complexity Research field in Europe, This CA is optimally situated to provide policy makers in the EU with a comprehensive picture of the European complexity research community.

In order to encompass the community in its entirety, we need a software tool for the storage, retrieval and processing of the raw materials for the report. The tool should allow all the members to collaborate in generating a “self-reflective” report of the complexity field. This can be achieved by a platform for seamless communal authoring. Only by recruiting all the subjects of such a report to participate in its composition, we will meet the enormous challenge of completeness, allowing all points of view a respectful place.

Description of work

The report is generated by the summation of contributions of the members of an “expert group” that is established for the task. The main technical instrument of this summation is an online platform, where the experts themselves and also the entire community may participate in the generation of the report. This will ensure that the maximum potential of the field will be expressed in the report.

Implementation

The members of the expert group participated in a few sessions of brain-storming. In parallel, we broadcast a call for participation, and we invite the entire complexity community to contribute content. We expect a wide response of the entire members of the community, since the disadvantage of an ill-representation is obvious to everyone.

The emerging end product is a representation of the community, its structure, its scientific areas of interest, its current strengths and its future prospects.
