WP # 4: Integrating complexity application areas from New EU states

A responsibility that we have taken upon ourselves was to make full use of the talents and capabilities of the scientists from the new and candidate EU members. In order to create a synergy between the interest, expertise and connections of each STREP and the great potential of the young scientists in the new and candidate EU members, we have defined a dedicated work-package. It aims at insuring the presence and absorption of young scientists from the new counties in all the STREPs activities and also take care of their special needs. We are supporting the visits of young scientists from Candidate and Associate States to the STREP sponsored activities. Moreover we support events that help them to enroll in scientific programs such as the European Complexity PhD. We expect tight complementary cooperation with the similar WP of ONCE.

Objectives and instruments

WP4 has the objective of increasing the participation of new EU members States in the Complexity community in general and specifically in STREP-related activities. The major objective of WP4 is to include young researchers from the new and applicant states in the complexity research of the STREPS.

Student’s trips to conferences, workshops and other STREP-related activities form the East to the West and vice versa are supported. Visits to thematic workshops and conferences create new collaborative ties. In particular we aim at initiating cooperative Complexity projects with the STREPs. Special competitions are organized for the best research initiatives within several domains (e.g. psychology, physics, biology etc) by the young researchers from the Eastern Europe.  Also competitions for identifying outstanding candidates for joint Complexity PhD projects are organized.

Researchers, who are already identified with the complexity perspective are invited to engage in collaborative research projects. This collaboration is expected to result in joint papers.
Complexity workshops are organized in Eastern Europe. The young participants have the occasion to contact potential research advisors and employers as well as co-workers. Special sessions for young local scientists to present their work are organized. Scientists from the West and from STREPs are also invited to teach in these workshops and thus identify the most promising students for common research projects.
We support also bilateral visits between east and West by PhD students to facilitate collaborative ties and institutional networking between East and West, especially in the context of STREP research.

We try to stimulate the development of initiatives that will build on these collaborative ties. Some of the conferences will be organized in cooperation with ONCE.
