Goal

The aim of the school is to provide some training on the application of Complex Systems methods to problems in the Social Sciences: essentially Sociology, Economics, Geography. Since Complex Systems methods are based on mathematical formalisms and computer simulations, some literacy in maths and computer science are a minimal requirement. Lectures will be given in English.

Format of the school

Four lectures of 90 minutes everyday, during six days. Each lecturer will give a series of four lectures. Attendance is for the whole week.

The GIACS Summer School will take place in Kazimierz Dolny, a little town in eastern part of Poland.

There will be be two site-seeing tours organized. Our guide's website, with a description of the tour can be found here.

Lectures will be given in hotel Dwa Ksiezyce, which is situated near the Kazimierz Dolny's Market Place. Through the windows of Dwa Ksiezyce the Fara Church, ruins of the castle and the River Vistula can be seen.

Internet: Free wifi in the hotel corridors, in the rooms and in the conference room. It is weak and sometimes breaks up, but there are also cable connection available in the hotel.

Transportation

Bus transportation from Warsaw to Kazimierz Dolny will be provided by the school. Two buses will wait fot participants on Sunday the 3rd of September at the Warsaw Airport parking.

The transportation company name is Panorama. The buses will be marked so that participants could recognize them.

ATTENTION! Due to transportation convenience the buses' departure schedule and organization have been changed.

1. The meeting point for all participants is ARRIVAL LOUNGE at Fryderyk Chopin terminal. Two organizers will wait for the participants with a card stating "Summer school" and will accompany the group to the buses.
2. Both buses will leave Warsaw airport to Kazimierz Dolny at the same time - 6 pm.
3. Following some participants' suggestions one of the buses will collect a part of the group from the Warsaw Central Train Station ("Warszawa Centralna").
   The meeting place will be in the MAIN HALL ("hala glowna") near the stairs vis-a-vis the cash-desks. An organizer will be waiting for the participants on the spot at around 6.30 pm (please take traffic into account as the organizer will be going from the airport with the rest of the group) with a card stating "Summer school". Please confirm that you are willing to be collected from the Warsaw Central Station to klisiecka@gmail.com. The persons that will not confirm their presence at the Station will not be waited for.

The two buses will return with participants to Warsaw after the Summer
school is finished. One will leave on the 10th of September in the morning. The other bus'es departure will depend on the participants preferences: it will leave either on the 10th of September in the morning or the 9th of September in the evening.

• TRAIN

Warsaw Cental Train Station can be reached from the airport with a bus no 175 departuring from outside the airport.

Going by train first you need to get an interrelation Warszawa - Pulawy Miasto, town which is located near Kazimierz Dolny (a full schedule can be looked up here).

To get from Pulawy Miasto to Kazimierz you need to take a taxi or a private bus (outside the station). The organizers can only pick up from Pulawy Miasto people that will come extraordinary late and will have no other means of transportation to the hotels. If that is going to be the case, please phone to hotel Two Moons 081 88 10 725 and leave information about the time of your arrival in Pulawy to Karolina Lisiecka.

• DIRECT BUS

More convenient, but a rarer means enabling to get straight to Kazimierz Dolny is provided by private bus “Halobus”. Its bus stop is nearby Warsaw Cental Train Station (bus 175 from the airport) and hotel Holiday Inn, on Aleje Jerozolimskie street at the same side as the station. The faulty side is that one should have it booked before – so once you decide about the timing, secure it with the company at the number: 0048 602 66 44 19.
