floor, 523 Terrasses de l'Agora, 91000 Ã‰vry, France (near Paris).

To facilitate research at the common borders, an Advanced Introduction aims at fostering a better understanding of the expectations, constraints, approaches and mode of thinking of a scientific partner across disciplines. Within a week, an AI brings participant scientists belonging to a modelling community from null/medium level to some understanding of the research frontiers in the target discipline, here the biological sciences. To reach this goal, seasoned lecturers present the key objects and concepts of the target domain, explain the current research questions and methods, and give a feel for what would be considered a (good) result. All the important and recent subdisciplines of biology will be covered.

Goal

The aim of the school is to provide some training on the application of Complex Systems methods to problems in the Social Sciences: essentially Sociology, Economics, Geography. Since Complex Systems methods are based on mathematical formalisms and computer simulations, some literacy in maths and computer science are a minimal requirement. Lectures will be given in English.

EPRSC - Taught Course for Researchers, on Complex Social Systems

The EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Science Research Council) has funded the LSE
Complexity Group, in association with the Open University, to offer a short course to train researchers in complexity theory. The overall aim of the course will be to enable researchers to understand complexity and network theory in the context of complex social systems, and to train them to use qualitative and quantitative tools and methods, underpinned by complexity theory.

The school will expose the students to data, computational techniques and theoretical concepts in complexity. The application fields will range from social studies (e.g. migration within the enlarged EC), to economic growth processes (e.g. East European transition), and the dynamics of organizations (emergence of hierarchical / (information) supply chains/networks within and between enterprises).

The emphasis will be on exposing in detail specific applications where the integration between the theoretical, computational and empirical studies has already been achieved or at least has began.

New directions of research for young PhD students under common collaborative supervision by interdisciplinary groups will be offered by the teachers and developed in special sessions.

In the framework of a collaboration initiative fostered by the Institute for Scientific Interchange in the field of the science of Complex Systems between Europe, China and India, we are organizing and hosting an CHINA-EU-INDIA Triangular Summer School on "Complexity Science and Real-World Applications" in Beijing (after the successful first school in Turin, Italy in June, 2007).

SCHOOL CONCEPT:

The 4th PhD European Complexity School

The ''European PhD Complexity Schools'' were introduced by GIACS as one of the instruments to initiate, escort and expose to the wider community research projects done by complexity young scientists. Over the last years dozens of students received their PhD following such events. While the previous schools took place mainly at ISI Foundation, Turin Italy , the present one will take place on Sept 10-14 in conjunction with the ''5th European Conference on Complex Systems ECCS 2008'' , Jerusalem (Sept 14-19) and a few other major events. The School will benefit form the speakers of those events and will serve as a tutorial and pedagogical introduction to the other events. In addition to the educational aspects, the contact with the world complexity leaders will deeply benefit the young researchers. While the complexity approach emphasizes synthesis over disciplinarity,
some of the talks of the school will fit - following the ECCS themes - under the titles:
